In All Circumstances

Praise the Lord, you angels of his; praise his glory and his strength. Praise him for his majestic glory, the glory of his name. Come before him clothed in sacred garments.

The voice of the Lord echoes from the clouds. The God of glory thunders through the skies. So powerful is his voice; so full of majesty. It breaks down the cedars. It splits the giant trees of Lebanon. It shakes Mount Lebanon and Mount Sirion. They leap and skip before him like young calves! The voice of the Lord thunders through the lighting. It resounds through the deserts and shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord spins and topples the mighty oaks. It strips the forests bare. They whirl and sway beneath the blast. But in his temple all are praising, "Glory, glory to the Lord!"

At the Flood, the Lord showed his control of all creation. Now he continues to unveil his power. He will give his people strength. He will bless them with peace. Psalm 29 (TLB)

Always be joyful. Always keep on praying. No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 (TLB)

Henry L. Childress lives in Arkansas. Spending the night with his 92-year old dad in his hospital room was a hectic experience. Between temperature checks, blood pressure checks, the noise of the ventilator tubes, medication alarms, and nurses taking blood samples, Henry realized he would not get much sleep.

Dad was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and fluid was building up around his lungs, making it hard for him to breathe. As Henry watched him lying in bed laboring to breathe in the early morning hours, he realized that he had forgotten his nightly prayers. He began to pray for Dad's recovery. He praised God for Dad's 92 years of life and for all the years Henry has had with him. Immediately Henry felt a sense of calm in the midst of all the noise and activity.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the frenetic activity of life that we forget to pray and praise God for what God has done in us and through us. When we find ourselves overwhelmed by the frenzy, we do well to recall Paul's words: "Pray without ceasing, give thanks in ( not for) all circumstances."

Prayer: Almighty and merciful God, help us always to make time for you, no matter how noisy and hectic our days become. Thank you for the peace you give us when we spend time with you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
