Here I Am
The human mind may devise many plans, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will be established. Proverbs 19: 21 (NRSV)
Yanti H. Damanik lives in West Java, Indonesia. His dream had always been to work for one of the world peace organizations. He prayed for God to help him. Because he knew that having experience would make it easier to find a job, he planned to volunteer at the organization he hoped would hire him.
He was happy when he got a call from the organization inviting him to apply for a position. He was called back for the second, third, and final stages of the selection process. He felt confident that he would be accepted. But finally they chose one of the other candidates. Yanti was disappointed and angry. This was the dream he had spent so much time and energy preparing for.
Two months later, Yanti learned of a Christian institution working for disadvantaged children. Though he was disappointed that God had not helped him to achieve his original dream, he still felt that God wanted him to serve others who are less fortunate than he is. He decided to apply, trusting that God knows what is best for his life. If he is not selected, it will be okay. Here I am, God. Use me.
It is hard not to get what we want, especially if we believe we are doing good. But sometimes God has other plans for our lives, and He always does what is in our best interest, if we let Him. Open your mind and your heart to God and pray for daily guidance - you will not be disappointed.
Prayer: Dear Lord, give us courage to serve you in whatever ways and places we can, on every step of our journey, in Jesus' name, amen.
