Happily Ever After
Your words are a flashlight to light the path ahead of me, and keep me from stumbling. I've said it once and I'll say it again and again: I will obey these wonderful laws of yours.
I am close to death at the hands of my enemies; oh, give me back my life again, just as you promised me. Accept my grateful thanks and teach me your desires. My life hangs in the balance, but I will not give up obedience to your laws. The wicked have set their traps for me along your path, but I will not turn aside. Your laws are my joyous treasure forever. I am determined to obey you until I die. Psalm 119: 105-112 (TLB)
DeVonna R. Allison is from Florida. DeVonna sighed when she read another devotion where a life was at risk, people prayed, and the life was miraculously restored. Of course she was glad for them, but she wondered, Where are the voices of those who trust God despite unanswered prayers?
DeVonna's husband and she prayed for their children even before they were born. They dedicated them to God, took them to church, taught them scripture, and sacrificed so they could have Christians educations. Their family served God with joy. But they still suffered,
The oldest son drowned as a teenager. After ten years of marriage, their oldest daughter's husband left her. Their youngest son was diagnosed with schizophrenia. It;s been three years since their youngest daughter has spoken to them.
Life is hard. Loved ones might die despite our faith and prayer. We may get divorced even when we trust. Diseases can be incurable or fatal. We may pray, live faithfully, and trust God, yet still face unthinkable tragedies.
But even knowing this, we can continue to pray and live for God - to believe that God is good, right, and lovely, and that God's ways are peace. Even when things go wrong, God is still by our side in the struggle. and we can find joy in knowing we are never alone.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your presence with us. Help us to remain faithful to you, no matter our circumstances, in Jesus's name, amen.
