God Who Saves
Read Luke 19:1-10 - Jesus visits the home of Zacchaeus
Jesus told him, "This shows that salvation has come to this home today. This man was one of the lost sons of Abraham, and I, the Messiah, have come to search for and to save such souls as his." Luke 19:9-10 (TLB)
Johanna lives in Finland. In her work as a nurse, she was caring for an elderly, dying patient. He was a grumpy man who would curse those caring for him. One day they were by his bedside as his doctor came in. Johanna had told the doctor about their patient's unhappiness, so he offered the man some medication to improve his mood. But he angrily refused to take it.
At mealtime, Johanna went back to feed him and said to him, "Something is bothering you. Would you like to talk about it?" He replied, "No! No use!" Then Johanna found the courage to ask, "May I pray for you?" His reply was even angrier: "No!" Johanna continued feeding him in silence. However, in her spirit she felt that the man regretted his abrupt reply.
The next morning, Johanna returned to work and had to medicate him right away. He was deteriorating quickly, and he cried out, "Help me." Johanna asked him, "How can I help you?" He replied, "Pray for me!"
Johanna doesn't remember what she prayed. It felt a bit clumsy, but she trusts God worked through that prayer. She never had another opportunity to pray with the man again. Later he slipped into unconsciousness and died.
Johanna has continued to pray for her patients and to trust God to care for them too.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for your amazing love and your gift of grace for us all, in Jesus' name. Amen.
