"Go out and stand before me on the mountain," the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain; it was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. after the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his scarf and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.
And a voice said, "Why are you here, Elijah?"
He replied again, "I have been working very hard for the Lord God of the armies of heaven, but the people have broken their covenant and have torn down your altars; they have killed every one of your prophets except me, and now they are trying to kill me, too." 1 Kings 19: 11-14 (TLB)
"If you fully obey all of these commandments of the Lord your God, the laws I am declaring to you today, God will transform you into the greatest nation in the World." Deuteronomy 28: 1 (TLB)
Dmitri Semjonov is from Rakvere, Estonia. Their home is located next to a park where Dmitri often walks with his young daughter in the early spring. When the birds begin their spring migration, the park is filled with birds and their singing. One day they heard an exceptionally pleasant song, but they couldn't locate the bird. Dmitri asked his daughter to be quiet, and they both listened carefully. After some time of patient listening, they saw a little gray bird that was producing the beautiful sound. They had to remain quiet in order to hear the voice of the bird.
Later that night, Dmitri started to think about the stories in scripture that relate to that experience. Sometimes we complain that we cannot hear the Lord's guiding voice. But we may not hear it because our minds can be filled with so many other thoughts. In those times, we can use the same method Dmitri's daughter and he used to hear the bird. We can put aside all unnecessary thoughts, remain quiet in prayer, and focus only on God.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to quiet the chaos in our minds so that we can take the time to hear your voice, accept it, and put it into practice what you tell us. Help us to listen, in Jesus' name, amen.
