I will go before you, Cyrus, and level the mountains and smash down the city gates of brass and iron bars. And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness, secret riches; and you will know that I am doing this - I, the Lord, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by your name.
And why have I named you for this work? For the sake of Jacob my servant - Israel, my chosen. I called you by name when you didn't know me. I am Jehovah; there is no other God. I will strengthen you and send you out to victory even though you don't know me, and all the world from east to west will know there is no other God. I am Jehovah and there is no one else. I alone am God. Isaiah 45:2-6 (TLB)
Arlene Rains Graber is from Kansas. When she was a young girl, her mother gave her a small box of cards containing God's promises from scripture. Each morning before school, they selected one to read. Those promises stayed with them all day and were a comfort when challenges arose. This tradition carried over into her marriage, motherhood, and divorce.
Years later, a major crisis hit her family when her adult daughter fell down the basement stairs and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Brain surgery followed. Arlene was told that if her daughter survived, the recovery process would take months or years of rehab and that total recovery was doubtful.
Machines pumped oxygen, fluids, and food into her body. Arlene was at first terrified, then angry. "Why us?" she thought. During another sleepless night, she sat up in bed and began to pray. She asked God to direct her. When she finished, she glanced over to the nightstand and spotted her box of scripture promises. "Guide my hand, dear Lord," Arlene whispered, as she drew out a card. It read, "We know that all things work together for good for those who love God" (Rom. 8:28, NRSV). Immediately, God's peace began to replace her anguish. How marvelous to have the promises of a living, loving God, who guides us and gives us comfort during life's challenges!
We don't know the outcome of this story, but it really doesn't matter. No matter the results, Arlene has found peace and comfort that only knowing and trusting God can give. Speak to God today about the things in your life that are troubling you, no matter how big or how small. He knows you by your name and he will strengthen you.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for your constant help, guidance, and healing power. Help us always to trust you, in Jesus' name, amen.
God can bring balance into your life, just like this rock.
