God's Light in Me
Read John 1: 1-14
Before anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God. He created everything there is - nothing exists that he didn't make. Eternal life is in him, and this life gives light to all mankind. His life is the light that shines through the darkness - and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1: 1-5 (TLB)
Jerry White lives in Florida. For several years he lived in a place where electricity could not be depended on. Most days they had electricity for three or four hours in the evening, but when the electricity abruptly went off there was total darkness. On clear nights the stars of the Milky Way and the moon provided light, but on cloudy nights the darkness was complete. Jerry often woke up in the night, heard the howls of packs of dogs or wolves, and felt suffocated by the darkness.
On one of these cold, dark nights Jerry woke up in paralyzing fear. Then some words of scripture came to his mind reminding him that God is light and is the source of all light. Jerry realized that because he belongs to God and God's light is in him, he always carries that light even when he may not be able to physically see it. He went back to sleep that night, feeling comforted.
Jerry has carried this lesson with him, and God is his constant light within. He is tempted to fear when he sees the evil in the world, but scripture again reminds him that God's light dwells in him. He can find peace in God's light and shine it so that others can find peace when darkness seems to be closing in.
Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the gift of light you have given us through your Son, in Jesus' name. Amen.
