Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he care for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.
1 Peter 5: 6-10 (NRSV)
Carol Harrison lives in Saskatchewan, Canada. When a women's retreat committee asker her to speak to them, God urged Carol to share her struggle with depression and how God brought people into her life in answer to her prayers. Carol did not want to be so vulnerable, but she trusted God's promise to give her the words and to take away her fear. It turned out that one young woman in particular needed to hear those words to know that she was not alone.
"I can't do it. I'm not as good as...." This type of thinking often comes into Carol's mind and makes her anxious. When God wanted her to share the truth of God's word with others, she responded in fear with, "Me? I can't." But God helped her overcome her fear.
God knows our needs, fears, and even our lack of faith. We can go to God, hand over our cares and fears, and then let God guide us in what to do. Carol might not have the same abilities as her friends. "I can't" is often still her first response. She is still learning how to give her fears, cares, and anxieties to God. But Carol also knows that just as God helped her speak about depression, God can help us all to do anything God asks of us.
This is so true. I used to be the same way, until God gave me the desire and strength to serve him. Now I can play piano when needed; I can sing his praises and I can even speak his word when he asks me to do so. If I can learn to trust and obey, anyone can if they so desire.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for helping us to move past our fears. Help us to trust that you will equip us for the tasks you ask of us, in Jesus' name. Amen.
