Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-26
Our bodies have many parts, but the many parts make up only one body when they are all put together. So it is with the "body" of Christ. Each of us is a part of the one body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves and some are free. But the Holy Spirit has fitted us all together into one body by the one Spirit, and have all been given that same Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12: 12-13 (TLB)
Sybil Austin Skakle lives in North Carolina. Eating breakfast one morning, she thought of these words from the Lord's Prayer: "Give us this day our daily bread." Sybil suddenly became aware of her gratitude for the many people who were responsible for her cereal and milk, her banana, and her cup of coffee. She was humbled as she imagined the many hands laboring to secure her meal.
Sybil thanked God for the provision of food and for all the people who had been involved. In gratitude, she prayed for the farmers who grew and harvested the grains, fruit, and coffee and for those who raised and milked the cows. And she prayed for all the people - factory workers, truckers, grocers, and many more - whose work made it possible for Sybil to receive these gifts.
We are independent, as God created us to be. We are blessed every day by many people we will never know. Being aware of that connection, her food was sweeter that morning and her heart was full of praise.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for our daily bread and for the people responsible for bringing it to our tables, in Jesus' name. Amen.
Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11 (NRSV)
