Follow God's Lead
But blessed is the man who puts his trust in the Lord and has made the Lord his hope and confidence. He is like a tree planted along a riverbank, with its roots reaching deep into the water - a tree not bothered by the heat nor worried by long months of drought. Its leaves stay green and it goes right on producing all its luscious fruit. Jeremiah 17: 7-8 (TLB)
Jessica E. Dutton lives in Maine. To celebrate their eleventh wedding anniversary Jessica and her husband took ballroom dancing lessons - something they had wanted to do for years! Before they learned the basic steps to the foxtrot, waltz, and merengue, their instructor taught them the proper dancing position. He showed them where to place their hands and told them to imagine they had swallowed broomsticks so they would stand tall and straight. Then he instructed Jessica to let her left shoulder rest firmly in her husband's hand so he could easily guide her across the dance floor. Yet, instead of trusting his guiding hand, Jessica often tried to anticipate the next steps or even completely take over, resulting in a misstep and loss of rhythm.
That advice about ballroom dancing has stuck with Jessica because of its broader application. How often do we ignore God's guiding hand and try to guess and plan the best steps forward? How often do we take over, thinking we know best? Yet all the while God is present to guide us if we trust ourselves to God's loving care. Truly there could be no better guide than our faithful God.
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for your steadying presence when we lose our rhythm. Help us trust you to guide us each and every day, in Jesus' name. Amen.
