For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29: 11-13 (NRSV)
Collin Kelly is from Texas. He watched his mom cry before he turned and walked away, off to his college dorm. He was the first to leave, and his mom couldn't handle it. Collin nearly couldn't either. Besides the hard goodbyes from his parents and sister, he also had to say goodbye to lifelong friends, his childhood home, and all of their familiar comforts. He knew that the next time he went back, things would be different. Friends who stayed behind would have moved on, and the relationship he had with his family would not be the same. Despite phone calls and text messages, Collin already felt a sense of separation.
Collin struggles with the idea of his life changing so rapidly. He prayed, reflected, and asked God for guidance. Just as the disciples had to accept that Jesus was leaving and that their former way of life was over, Collin had to remember that God had led him here. And so he followed.
Although the goodbyes were tough, Collin knows they prepared him for his future. Knowing that changes are part of God's plan for him has made him grateful and optimistic. God is with us every step we take, even if that step is in a new direction.
Prayer: Dear God, remind us to trust in you and remain positive in the face of change. Keep us on the path of righteousness as we work to accomplish the goals you have set for us, in Jesus' name. Amen.
