Expect the Best
Read Philippians 4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7 (NRSV)
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NRSV)
Esther Bonner lives in California. There's a tunnel just a short distance from her house, and when the traffic is light, you can yell out the window of your car and hear a marvelous echo. Whatever you say comes back to you.
That echo is incredibly reminiscent of Esther's life - what she put out there is exactly what she has gotten back. For years she had a negative attitude, filled with doubt, fear, and low expectations. She was a firm believer that anything that can go wrong will. And like an echo. she got back exactly what she put out, what she expected and dwelt on.
After her mother passed away, she turned to scriptures for comfort. She got an unexpected attitude adjustment. As she took in the stories of God's love, forgiveness, kindness, and compassion, her heart changed. She found herself genuinely happy. The more she focuses on the goodness of God, the more enjoyable her life becomes. Esther still has challenges to face, but her heart is lighter as she faces them.
We all have challenges in our lives, but having God on our side helps to face them with hope and joy.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to see the world and all who live in it through your eyes, in Jesus' name. amen.
