Read Ezekiel 37-1-14 Story of the dry bones.
The power of the Lord was upon me (Ezekiel) and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley full of old, dry bones that were scattered everywhere across the ground. He led me around among them, and then he said to me: "Son of dust, can these bones become people again?" I replied, "Lord, you alone know the answer to that." Then he told me to speak to the bones and say: "O dry bones, listen to the words of the God, for the Lord God says, See! I am going to make you live and breathe again!" Ezekiel 37: 1-5 (TLB)
Piyumi Kapugeekiyana is from Sri Lanka. During a recent battle with depression, Piyumi found herself devoid of all desire for God. For a few months, she lived in a seemingly impenetrable fog. Morning devotions were a struggle. church sermons felt wearisome, and ministry was a burden too great to bear. It was a dry season unlike anything she had ever experienced. At the lowest points of her journey, Piyumi railed at God, "How could you let this happen to me again?"
One day, Piyumi was seized by a once-familiar desire to open her Bible, and the Holy Spirit led her to the book of Ezekiel. "Mortal, can these bones live?" When she read these words, Piyumi immediately felt a kinship with Ezekiel. She was pondering the dry bones of her life and wondering if they could ever come alive again. She too was crying out, "My bones are dry, my hope is lost, I myself am cut off!"
Piyumi continued to read about how as Ezekiel prophesied there was a rattling sound as the bones came together. Eventually, breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet. Piyumi could not stop her tears. As she savored this story, God breathed fresh life into her. Hope that she thought she had lost started to blossom again out of the words of scripture. She was reassured that God had never left her side. Even when hope seems lost, God knows our struggles and can breathe new life into us.
Another example on how important it is to know your scriptures. If Piyumi didn't do morning devotions, even when it was a struggle, she might never have found the answer to her situation. If the Bible is going to help you, then you must get into the Bible.
Prayer: Dear God, speak to us in the valley and make our dry bones come alive again with your breath of life, in Jesus' name. Amen
