Do Not Be Anxious
Read Matthew 6:25-34
"So don't be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time."
Matthew 6:34 (TLB)
"Not one sparrow (What do they cost? Two for a penny?) can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it."
Matthew 10>29 (TLB)
Emilie McCauley lives in North Carolina. as a young married couple, they had a tight budget. When an emergency home repair left them without grocery money, Emilie was sick with worry. She sat on their farmhouse stoop and numbly watched their two young children play in the yard without a care. She tried to imagine how she could stretch the meager contents of their pantry to feed her family until the next payday, but she knew it wouldn't be enough.
Suddenly a car turned in to their driveway, and the horn sounded. A woman got out and greeted Emilie. She explained to her that years earlier the previous homeowner had let her pick scuppernong grapes on the property, and she asked if she could pick some again.
Emilie had never seen this woman before, and she never saw her again. But after she had picked grapes, she gave Emilie some money in thanks - more than enough to buy groceries. It felt like a miracle.
Emilie has recalled this unexpected blessing many times over the years. Time and again the providence of God has taught her the power of replacing worry with trust. We all can hold on to joy even in uncertain circumstances.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for all the ways you provide for our needs. Guide us to show your love to others in unexpected ways, in Jesus' name. Amen.
