Comfort for Others
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our consolation is abundant through Christ. If we are being afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation; if we are being consoled, it is for your consolation, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we are also suffering. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our consolation.
2 Corinthians 1: 3-7 (NRSV)
Olaiya Muyiwa Benralph is from the Federal Capital territory of Nigeria. Olaiya had just finished high school when her father died. She felt her world collapsing as she stood by his body and reflected on all the promises he had made to her: to care for her and support her education to any level she desired.
She cried and could not be consoled. But then she felt as if God whispered to her, "Your father is dead, but your heavenly Father is alive and will see you through." Those words sank deep into her heart and strengthened her. She has since gone to university and finished her first and second degrees with the help of God.
The comfort God gave her enables her to console others going through the same pain. In the years since her father died, She has had many friends who have lost loved ones and felt overwhelmed with grief. But each time Olaiya shared the soothing words that God gave her and how God saw her through her greatest ordeal.
God does not abandon us in hard times, and our experiences can help us bless others. We can take solace in God in difficult times and find the courage to help others who suffer the same. Whatever pain we feel today, God's comfort will sustain us and help us care for others.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to understand how the comfort you give us in trouble can console others in despair, thru Jesus' name. Amen.
