Come to Me
Say there! Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink - even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine and milk - it's all free! Why spend your money on food that doesn't give you strength? Why pay for groceries that do you no good? Listen and I'll tell you where to get good food that fattens up the soul!
Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen for the life of your soul is at stake. I am ready to make an everlasting covenant with you, to give you all the unfailing mercies and love that I had for King David.
Isaiah 55:1-3 (TLB)
Glenda (Revell) Paquette lives in Ontario, Canada. Tap, tap, tap! What is making that noise? Glenda wondered. Upon investigation, she discovered a persistent little woodpecker tapping on a metal light pole where he would never find an insect for breakfast.
Pondering this curious sight, Glenda thought about how often we humans go after false sources of nourishment like popularity, money, education, or success. But Jesus tells us, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty" (John 6:35). Jesus is the source of abundant life! Only he can satisfy our hunger. Too often we seek sustenance from false sources, like a woodpecker on a metal pole. But when we listen to Jesus' call "Come to me!" and open ourselves to God's word, we can receive new life (see John 7:37).
Prayer: Father God, help us to hear your call and respond so that we can share your love with others, in Jesus' name. Amen.
