Closer to God

Bend down and hear my prayer, O Lord, and answer me, for I am deep in trouble. Protect me from death, for I try to follow all your laws. Save me, for I am serving you and trusting you. Be merciful, O Lord, for I am looking up to you in constant hope. Give me happiness, O Lord, for I worship only you. O Lord, you are so good and kind, so ready to forgive; so full of mercy for all who ask your aid.

Listen closely to my prayer, O God. Hear my urgent cry. I will call to you whenever trouble strikes, and you will help me. Psalm 86: 1-7 (TLB)

Yolika del Carmen Maurera Sosa lives in Texas. While working diligently to pursue financial security, Yolika grew apart from God. Then she was devastated when she received her diagnosis: lupus, a disease that attacks the body's immune system. In her case, it seriously affected her lungs. Due to the multiple recurring complications involved, Yolika went to the clinic many times. With each visit, she lived with the uncertainty of her survival.

With the complexities unique to this condition and the ensuing depression, Yolika cried out to the Lord to help her. She wanted to believe once more in God's promises. Gradually, her health began to improve. Even more extraordinary was the fact that this situation allowed her to draw closer to God again and to share with others the wonder of God's power to change things. Thanks be to God!

Prayer: Merciful God, in our distress you hear our cries. Thank you for your love and grace that creates change in our hearts and allows us to trust in your promises for our good. In Jesus' name. Amen.
