Choosing God

The Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, says, I am the Lord your God, who punishes you for your own good and leads you along the paths that you should follow.

Oh, that you had listened to my laws! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river, and great waves of righteousness. Then you would have become as numerous as the sands along the seashores of the world, too many to count, and there would have been no need for your destruction. Isaiah 48:17-19 (TLB)

Cathy Lee Taylor is from Florida. Cathy and her family live close to the Gulf of Mexico. Cathy loves to walk along the beautiful beaches of white sands and emerald green water. When she sees and hears the waves of the ocean crashing on the sand, she feels incredible peace and joy at being so close to nature and to God. Cathy often says to her husband, "We should come here every day." But despite the beach's proximity, they rarely go. The responsibilities of work, home, and family takes up most of their time. They forgo the natural beauty of the shoreline to walk around their neighborhood, often following the same path each day. While their neighborhood is lovely, it does not compare to the seashore or to the peace that she finds there.

Cathy's spiritual life is similar. Like the ocean, God is always nearby. God is only a prayer away regardless of her location, yet Cathy often forgets to read the Bible or visit with God. When She doesn't make spending time with God a priority, she misses out on the peace and wisdom that comes from daily Bible study.

Fortunately, each day brings a new opportunity to choose the peace and well-being God offers through praying and reading the Bible. The gift of God's power and peace comes when we choose to devote ourselves to time with God ahead of everything else.

Prayer: Dear God, teach us what is best for us, and direct us in the way we should go. Encourage us to spend time with you each day, in Jesus' name, amen.
