Choosing a Path
We may make our plans, but God has the last word.
You may think everything you do is right, but the Lord judges your motives.
Ask the Lord to bless your plans, and you will be successful in carrying them out.
Everything the Lord has made has its destiny; and the destiny of the wicked is destruction.
The Lord hates everyone who is arrogant; he will never let them escape punishment.
Be loyal and faithful, and God will forgive your sin. Have reverence for the Lord and nothing evil will happen to you.
When you please the Lord, you can make your enemies into friends.
It is better to have a little, honestly earned, than to have a large income, dishonestly gained.
You may make your plans. but God directs your actions.
Proverbs 16:1-9 (Today's English Version)
George Peters is from British Columbia, Canada. For a long time, he believed that there was only one clear path for his life and that if he missed it, he would be out of God's perfect will for him. But George thinks that obeying God is not that clear-cut. He now believes God had given us interest and talents in areas that will bring us a joyful life. Surely we have a say in the outcome, but George believes God can bless anything we put our hands and hearts to as long as we are seeking God. Proverb 16:9 says, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps."(NIV)
What liberating words! When George faithfully plans a course of action, God will be with him every step of the way. God has given him talents and desires; it is up to George to use them. George was always afraid that God would call him to go somewhere he didn't want to go - to preach the gospel there. Maybe someday God will; but George also believes that God will place a desire in his heart to do so. For now, George just wants to use the talents God has given him and minister in the circles he lives in, remembering that God wants the best for him.
What do you believe? Do you believe God is guiding your life choices or are you struggling all on your own? I believe life is much easier, even on my hardest day, when I have God helping me get through it. I have chosen to use what talents God has given me to the best of my abilities, and God has blessed me for my efforts. There is a song, "The longer I serve him, the sweeter He grows."
Prayer: O God, thank you for the gifts and talents we can use to joyfully serve others, in Jesus' name, amen.
