Carrying a Heavy Load

Read Colossians 3:12-17

Since you have been chosen by God who has given you this new kind of life, and because of his deep love and concern for you, you should practice tenderhearted mercy and kindness to others. Don't worry about making a good impression on them but be ready to suffer quietly and patiently. Be gentle and ready to forgive, never hold grudges. Remember the Lord forgave you, so you MUST forgive others.

Most of all, let love guide your life, for then the whole church will stay together in perfect harmony. Let the peace of heart which comes from Christ be always present in your hearts and lives, for this is your responsibility and privilege as members of his body. And always be thankful. Colossians 3:12-15 (TLB)

Bill Findlay lives in Scotland. He phoned a friend whose husband suffers from multiple sclerosis. She herself does not enjoy the best of health. "How are you today?" Bill asked. "Well," she replied, "it's like I'm carrying a heavy suitcase around with me everywhere today." They talked for a while, and at the end of their conversation she told Bill that she was feeling better. Being able to share her troubles with a friend had helped.

There are times when we all feel overburdened and would like to share that weight with someone. As Christians, we do indeed have someone: Jesus is only a prayer away! Jesus has assured us that we can bring our heavy burdens to him and find rest. As Christians, we can reach out to others with the love of Christ, sharing their burdens and lightening the load even as Christ does this for us. When we walk together with Christ, our burden is light.

Prayer: Dear Lord, when we feel overburdened, help us to remember that You are only a prayer away. Remind us to share this knowledge with others, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Matthew 11:30
