Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind: "Why are you using your ignorance to deny my providence? Now get ready to fight, for I am going to demand some answers from you, and you must reply.
"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Do you know how its dimensions were determined, and who did the surveying? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone, as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? " Job 38: 1-7 (TLB)
" Do you realize the extent of the earth? Tell me about it if you know! " Job 38: 18 (TLB)
Marcal Ainsa i Bertran is from Catalonia, Spain. One morning he met up with his instructor at the scientific complex of their college, and they went to the room where their Transmission Electron Microscope is kept. In the dim room Marcal's instructor showed him the controls, and they started to view their sample. Looking at the computer monitor of the microscope, the image started to zoom in, and suddenly Marcal could see the atomic structure of the sample!
The image was so different than anything that can be seen with our eyes alone. It made Marcal think about how imperfect our understanding of the universe is. We are limited beings with limited comprehension.
God, who created the universe and whose knowledge is far beyond our own, calls us to be humble and open to opinions or answers that may challenge our own perspective. When we remember our limited understanding, we can be more patient with people whose understanding and beliefs are different from our own.
Prayer: dear God, help us understand our smallness and humbly learn to respect people whose understanding and beliefs are different from ours, in Jesus' name. Amen.
