Read Colossians 2: 1-7
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2: 6-7 (NRSV)
Douglas Ruffle is from Tennessee. When he was a freshman in high school, his dad lost his job. He had survived a stroke, but his employer thought he wasn't up to the task anymore. They were going through hard times as his parents' savings account kept dwindling the longer his father was out of work.
Douglas's church knew their situation and encouraged Douglas to go to summer camp, offering to pay two-thirds of the cost. But Douglas was a city guy, not enamored with spending a week in the woods. Besides, he wasn't interested in reading the Bible and other activities associated with church. But his church and his parents finally convinced Douglas to give camp a try.
When Douglas arrived at camp, his counselor introduced him to several other guys, and immediately they started getting to know one another. It didn't take but a few hours for his reluctance to be turned into something significant. Douglas learned about Christian community and the importance of having his life built around Jesus. They had fun hiking, swimming, and singing. Camp was a turning point in his life.
Douglas is grateful for a church who cared for him and for a ministry that provided a safe and fun experience where the love of God and the God of love could take root in his heart.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to find our rootedness in you through following your son, Jesus Christ. Thank you for providing experiences, such as camping, to bring us closer to you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
