Beginning to Heal

I am completely discouraged - I lie in the dust. Revive me by your Word. I told you my plans and you replied. Now give me your instructions. Make me understand what you want; for then I shall see your miracles.

I weep with grief; my heart is heavy with sorrow; encourage and cheer me with your words. Keep me far from every wrong; help me, undeserving as I am, to obey your laws, for I have chosen to do right. I cling to your commands and follow them as closely as I can. Lord, don't let me make a mess of things. If you will only help me to want your will, then I will follow your laws even more closely.

Just tell me what to do and I will do it, Lord. As long as I live I'll wholeheartedly obey. Make me walk along the right paths for I know how delightful they really are. Psalms 119: 25- 35 (TLB)

The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us to do good to everyone. 2 Timothy 3: 16-17 (TLB)

Christopher L. Scott is from Washington. How could someone in his thirties have this much back pain? Chris wondered. One day the pain just showed up. Chris didn't know what had caused it, but it hurt all day and night - as he sat to do his work, while standing to cook dinner, when working outside in the yard, and while trying to sleep at night. He went to the doctor, but even after months of x-rays, consultations, referrals, physical therapy, and medications, nothing had helped.

Chris resolved to try something new. He would walk 30 minutes a day for 30 days. After walking daily for a week, the pain had lessened. The following two weeks, the pain was even less. And after one month of daily walks, his back felt better than it had in a year. The regular, gentle exercise was helping to heal his back, loosen the muscles, and eliminate his pain.

Everyone has pain at some point. Often the pain we feel most is emotional, be it from unkind words, betrayal, or grief. When we are in emotional pain, spending time with God begins to heal us. Even spending 30 minutes a day reading God's word will help reduce our pain. Just as walking every day healed Chris's back, reading God's word every day heals our hearts.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for giving us your word. Help us make time to mediate on it daily, in Jesus's name. Amen.
