Aroma of Christ

But thanks be to God! For through what Christ has done, he has triumphed over us so that now wherever we go he uses us to tell others about the Lord and to spread the Gospel like a sweet perfume. As far as God is concerned there is a sweet, wholesome fragrance in our lives. It is the fragrance of Christ within us, an aroma to both the saved and the unsaved all around us. To those who are not being saved, we seen a fearful smell of death and doom, while to those who know Christ we are a life-giving perfume. But who is adequate for such a task as this? Only those who, like ourselves, are men of integrity, sent by God, speaking with Christ's power, with God's eye upon us. We are not like those hucksters - and there are many of them - whose idea in getting out the Gospel is to make a good living out of it.

2 Corinthians 2: 14-17 (TLB)

Hisako Adachi is from Kanagawa, Japan. On her way to church one Sunday morning, she noticed a pleasant scent. Hisako looked up and saw olive flowers in bloom. Each of the small flowers was giving off a gentle aroma. The scent lifted Hisako's spirits, and she thanked God for the wonders of creation.

The fragrance reminded her of the passage from 2 Corinthians above. She has met some people who spread the aroma of Christ and has felt the presence of God in their ministries. She always hopes to be like them, but Hisako is uncertain about her ability to do so.

However, Hisako felt the Lord reassure her through those olive flowers that she should not compare herself to others. Olive blossoms are smaller in size than roses, and their blooming season is different from other flowers. But in the season and the manner that God designed for them, they spread an aroma that tells of God's wonderful creation. Further, Hisako need not rely solely on her own abilities, for it is God who created her. Like the olive flowers that bloom and spread their aroma naturally, God will enable her to spread an aroma of faith.

Prayer: God of creation, thank you for your love. Use each of us as your vessels to fill this world with the aroma of Christ's presence. In His name, we pray. Amen.
