Anytime, Anywhere

Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are Any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. James 5: 13-16 (NRSV)

And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

1 John 5:14 (NRSV)

Frankie Roland lives in Colorado. When he was a child, he spent a part of each summer with his grandparents. He loved exploring around their big farm. One day as Frankie was going down to the creek to rake our pretty rocks, he heard his grandpa praying. His voice was coming from the corn crib where he often had his private devotions. As Frankie listened, he heard him say his name. Grandpa asked God to put a desire in his heart to live for God and for God to keep him safe from harm. He never forgot that prayer. He wondered if he prayed for him daily. Somehow that thought made Frankie feel safe and secure.

When Frankie was a teenager, he gave his heart to the Lord and has tried to be a faithful Christ-follower for many years. He now prays daily for his six grandchildren.

The Bible tells us that "the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective" (James 5:16). His grandpa's prayers for him have taught Frankie that we can pray for anyone, anytime, anywhere: members of our family, the children at the nearby park or playground, a stranger on the bus. Then in Psalm 91:15 we find assurance that God hears and answers us: "When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them."

Prayer: O God, thank you for the people who pray for us and the positive influence they can have on our lives, in Jesus' name. Amen.
