An Answer to Prayer

As for God, his way is perfect; The word of the Lord is true. He shields all who hide behind him. Our Lord alone is God; We have no other fortress; He has made us safe. He causes the good to walk a steady tread like mountain goats upon the rocks. He gives me skill in war and strength to bend a bow of bronze. You have given me the shield of your salvation; Your gentleness has made me great. You have made wide steps for my feet, to keep them from slipping.

2 Samuel 22: 31-37 (TLB)

Bob Baer lives in Kansas. He awoke with a feeling of dread. He was going to see their son in a nursing home for people with mental illness. The previous time his wife and Bob had visited was a disaster. Their son was combative, and his delusions were so strong that they weren't able to connect with him.

Now Bob was preparing to visit again, and he felt strongly apprehensive. As he does every morning, he read The Upper Room before he left. The writer spoke of heavy burdens and how God had met her every need, providing strength and rest. Reflecting on her words, Bob prayed for God to give him peace, patience. and understanding for his upcoming visit. Immediately, Bob felt God's precious love surrounding him.

When he arrived, their son met him with a smile and a big hug. The visit was the most fulfilling in years. His delusions were minimal. They spent time recalling happy memories. Bob was able to hear his great big belly laugh. When it was time to leave, he gave Bob another hug.

How do I explain the gift of this good visit? Was it just a coincidence? No! Their time together was an answer to prayer. Even in the midst of anxiety and difficult circumstances, God strengthens us with love and blesses us in unexpected, generous ways.

Prayer: Loving God, help us always to put out trust in you when we are anxious. Thank you for giving us peace in our times of need and blessing us with moments of joy, in Jesus' name. Amen.
