Always With Us
But I stand silently before the Lord, waiting for him to rescue me. For salvation comes from him alone. Yes, he alone is my Rock, my rescuer, defense and fortress - why then should I be tense with fear when troubles come?
My protection and success come from God alone. He is my refuge, a Rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust him all the time. Pour out your longings before him, for he can help! Psalm 62: 5-8 (TLB)
Kevin McPoyle lives in Pennsylvania. When he and his wife babysit their granddaughter, she doesn't always cooperate when it is time for her to go to bed. She cries as we put her in her crib in unfamiliar surroundings. Kevin sits next to her crib in the dark, patting her back and soothing her until she settles and her cries diminish. From time to time, not fully asleep, she'll glance up to see if I'm still there, watching her, protecting her, ready to soothe and comfort her. Eventually she goes to sleep, content and relaxed.
The way she peeks to see if her father is still there reminds Kevin of God's constant presence in our lives. Sometimes we are uncertain of God's presence and try to get a glimpse of God. When we're in the dark and desperate for soothing and support, God is there. In whatever circumstances we find ourselves - no matter how dark - we can trust in God's promise to be with us.
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for your presence with us, even in the toughest times. Thank you for listening to our longings and concerns, in Jesus' name. Amen.
