A Step of Faith
Read Matthew 14:22-33 - Jesus walks on water
He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on water, and came toward Jesus. Matthew 14:29 (NRSV)
Asako Yano lives in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Asako has an upcoming medical examination at the hospital that she will be going alone. Normally, her mother would come with her. So the idea of going by herself fills her with fear and anxiety. There might be something terrifying in the test results, Asako thinks. When the results do come, will I be able to receive them calmly?
As she prepares to go by herself, Asako tries to remember Bible stories. She reminds herself that she has the support of friends who are praying for her. These thoughts strengthen her. In the midst of this ordeal, Asako is realizing that she needs to take a step into the unknown.
When we have something on our minds that we can't stop worrying about, we may brood about it. Asako's experience has taught her about the power of entrusting worry to Jesus. She has heard people say, "If you take one step forward, Jesus will lead you." That one step is a step of faith. As we take it, we learn that Jesus walks with us and supports us. With Christ, we are never alone.
Prayer: dear Jesus, thank you for walking with us in all situations. Give us the courage to step out in faith and meet you, We pray in Your holy name. Amen.
