A Steady Path

One day some mothers brought their babies to him to touch and bless. But the disciples told them to go away.

Then Jesus called the children over to him and said to the disciples, "Let the little children come to me! Never send them away! For the Kingdom of God belongs to men who have hearts as trusting as these little children's. And anyone who doesn't have their kind of faith will never get within the Kingdom's gates." Luke 18: 15-17 (TLB)

Teach a child to choose the right path, and when he is older, he will remain upon it. Proverbs 22:8 (TLB)

Gloria Amparo Valencia Riascos lives in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Her life has been full of strong role models. Her mother was head of the household and the single parent of six children. She worked from morning till night to support them. Her grandmother Bertha left them a great legacy, reaching them by example to be hardworking and strong, instilling in them the assurance that God is always with them.

In the afternoons, her grandmother would permit them to visit Dona Esther, a woman from the neighborhood who enjoyed looking after children. She always prepared something delicious to eat. While they ate, she read aloud stories and parables from the Bible. These stories left a deep impression in Gloria's young heart and mind, and her life began to change. Despite financial constraints, her constant hope and prayer was to continue her studies. She asked God to help her reach her goal of becoming a teacher.

Gloria persevered, and her goal became a reality. Her cornerstone of faith was laid by the strong people in her life who followed the teaching to "start children off on the way they should go...." Because of their guidance, Gloria remains on a steady path that leads to God.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for people of faith who mentor children and provide opportunities for them to know you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
