A Road Map
"Let not your heart be troubled. You are trusting God, now trust in me. There are many homes up there where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with me where I am. If this weren't so, I would tell you plainly. And you know where I am going and how to get there."
"No, we don't," Thomas said. "We haven't any idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
Jesus told him, "I am the Way - yes, and the Truth and the Life. No one can get to the Father except by means of me. If you had known who I am, then you would have known who my Father is. From now on you know him - and have seen him!" John 14:1-7 (TLB)
Robert Terhune lives in Oregon. One of the things that has always intrigued him about his wife is her love for road maps. She learned to read them as a girl, became the navigator for her family, and now continues to be for theirs. Though they often use a GPS now, she still prefers a paper map so she can see the entire course of their journey.
Our lives are like a road trip in many ways. There is a beginning and an end, and how we get between these destinations is important. Robert doesn't want to waste his life by getting lost along the way and potentially wasting the precious time he is allotted on earth.
The words of Jesus in John 14:6 remind him how God loves him enough to provide him with a map for life. Jesus invites him into a relationship. He invites us too. But, more than that, Jesus' words and teachings show Robert the way forward. They help him to live a life that is transformed through a relationship with his Creator, who loves him and invites him into eternal life. He invites us too. So Robert has come to see life as an exciting road trip with Jesus as his guide and strength, helping him day by day! Jesus will also be our guide and strength each day, if we let Him.
Prayer: Our Father, thank you for giving us Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life. Walk with us on this journey of life, and transform us to live lives of love modeled after Jesus, as we pray in His name. Amen.
