A Portrait of Christ
But you must keep on believing the things you have been taught. You know they are true for you know that you can trust those of us who have taught you. You know how, when you were a small child, you were taught the holy Scriptures; and it is these that make you wise to accept God's salvation by trusting in Christ Jesus. The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. It is God's way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone. 2 Timothy 3: 14-17 (TLB)
It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others. Ephesians 2:10 (TLB)
Verner Guthrie is from Alabama. One of his hobbies is painting landscapes. He enjoys looking at God's creation and trying to portray his version of land, sky, and water on canvas. In order to paint, Verner has to study painting techniques and the best way to present natural elements of the earth. It is about mixing colors and using the proper shapes, lighting, and perspective. The more he learns about nature, the better Verner is able to paint because he understands his subject. If he is successful, others can see and understand his paintings and hopefully be inspired by them.
The verse quoted above tells us that God has created us with the potential for doing good works through Jesus Christ. The reading from 2 Timothy talks about the value of Bible study. The more we study, pray, and meditate on God's word in the Bible, the better we understand who God is. When God's word becomes part of us through the Holy Spirit, the better we can portray Christ to others when they hear our words and see our actions. When we do this, we become God's witness and exhibit his workmanship. Let us be a portrait of Christ for God's glory throughout the world.
Prayer: Our Father, help us to know you better through the study of scripture. May your Holy Spirit enable us to be your example in this world so that others will see Christ through us, in Jesus' name. Amen.
