A Loving Embrace
He is like a father to us, tender and sympathetic to those who reverence him. For he knows we are but dust, and that our days are few and brief, like grass, like flowers, blown by the wind and gone forever.
But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting, to those who reverence him; his salvation is to children's children of those who are faithful to his covenant and remember to obey him! Psalm 103: 13-18 (NRSV)
There are three things that remain - faith, hope, and love - and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NRSV)
When David Smith was 14 years old, his father was in a serious car accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Some days he could barely walk because he was in severe pain. His recovery took 10 years. This was a difficult time for that family, because their primary provider could no longer work. life changed for all of them.
One night when David was 16, his dad was in his room alone. For some reason, David though that he could use an act of love. Now David believes that God directed him. He walked into his room, told his father that he loved him, and embraced him. He held his father for several minutes, and tears rolled down his cheeks. At the time, David didn't know what he had done for his dad. He didn't know the pain and depression he was going through, the worthlessness he felt, or that he was feeling tempted by thoughts of suicide. To this day, David's dad cherishes that embrace and thanks David for it.
Over the years, his dad and David have told many others about that special moment. We may never know that full impact of that one embrace. God showed me that even the smallest act of love can change a life forever.
Years ago, God asked me to become His huger. (There is a story here.) But since 1973, I have been hugging for God. The only thing I need is permission; otherwise I don't even have to know you because you are a child of God and He knows you. Even this virus won't stop me, if someone really needs a hug. But a smile, or just a gentle touch, works as well. I can always wash my hands and wear a mask. The important thing is to know God loves you no matter what you are going thru. God bless! Judith
Prayer: Heavenly father, thank you for loving us as your children. Guide us to show love to those who need it, in Jesus' name, amen.
