A Knock at the Door
Read Isaiah 65: 17-25
"Ask, and you will be given what you ask for. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened." Matthew 7:7 (TLB)
Faith Ford lives in England. Growing up in the London suburbs, she remembers mischievous children knocking at their door and running off before her mother had time to open it. She would be puzzled and then upset that her work had been interrupted. When Faith moved to a new town as an adult, she experienced the same prank and discovered how frustrating it was to open the door to find no one there.
For many years Faith tried to lead her life without God's guidance. Finally, when everything fell apart, a wise Christian friend suggested Faith pray to God for help. Somewhat skeptically she "knocked" in prayer and to her amazement discovered God's door opened to her. With God's help and the assistance of Christian friends, she got her life back on track. Over the years Faith has come to trust that when she knocks at God's door, God will always open it for her.
Faith wonders if there are times when she was like the children playing their game. When has she knocked at God's door in prayer but not waited around long enough to hear an answer? Does God open the door to find that she has vanished? The miracle of grace is that God constantly listens for our knocking and always responds in love by being there for us. Sometimes we may have to wait, or quiet ourselves down, to the point we can hear.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant us perseverance and persistence in prayer, in Jesus' name, amen.
