A Guiding Hand
Read Psalm 28: 1-9
He is my strength, my shield from every danger. I trusted in him, and he helped me. Joy rises in my heart until I burst out in songs of praise to him. Psalm 28: 7 (TLB)
Margaret Martin lives in the Australian Capital Territory, in Australia. Twice a week she waits for a morning bus at the top of a small hill. While she waits, she watches as primary-school children ride bikes to school with their parents. The children often struggle to get up the hill on their bikes, but their loving parents give a word of encouragement or lean down from their own bikes to gently guide their child up the hill. Watching these parents makes Margaret think of the guiding hand of God in her life.
In her early twenties after completing her master's degree, she went to training college in Auckland, New Zealand, with the intention of becoming a high school teacher. While there she was expectantly offered a lecturing job at an Australian university. She prayed for guidance in this dilemma.
On the Sunday before Margaret was to give her answer, she was teaching a Bible class at church when God's guidance came to her clearly. This was where she should be - teaching teenagers, not working in a university. Like a good parent, God helped her recognize her strengths, and she went on to have a rewarding career as a teacher. Confiding in God in prayer, seeking guidance, and receiving answers have been mainstays in her life. Looking back, Margaret can see that God has always been with her.
One advantage that comes with age is being able to look back and see how God has always been there thru the good times and the tough times.
Prayer: Loving God, thank you for always being with us. Grant us the faith to trust in your guidance, and help us to recognize your hand at work in our lives, in Jesus' name. Amen
