A Good Night's Sleep
Stand before the Lord in awe, and do not sin against him. Lie quietly upon your bed in silent meditation. Put your trust in the Lord, and offer him pleasing sacrifices.
Many say that God will never help us. Prove them wrong, O Lord, by letting the light of your face shine down upon us. Yes, the gladness you have given me is far greater than their joys at harvest time as they gaze at heir bountiful crops. I will lie down in peace and sleep, for though I am alone, O Lord, you will keep me safe. Psalm 4:6-8 (TLB)
I will bless the Lord who counsels me; he gives me wisdom in the night. He tells me what to do. Psalm 16:7 (TLB)
Lisa Stackpole lives in Wisconsin. In the past, sleep sometimes eluded her. Though she would try to relax, she would "replay" conversations from the day and consider how she might have responded differently. Sometimes she would fret about a difficult situation at work or the health of a loved one.
As her faith grew, Lisa realized such brooding was counter-productive - God was calling her to focus on positive things (see Phil. 4:8). Lisa started what she now calls her blessing book. At the beginning of each year she purchases a weekly planner with several lines for each day - its accomplishments, challenges, and blessings - and list things for which she is thankful. These blessings can be as ordinary as a call from a friend or as remarkable as recovering from surgery. When she is concerned about something, she makes a notation to remind her that God is in control and prayerfully turns the situation over to the Lord. As she writes, she gives thanks for the many ways she encounters God's love.
Lately it has become common for Lisa to start her list of blessings with "a good night's sleep." Her nighttime anxiety has been exchanged for the peace only God can give.
Prayer: God of peace, thank you for the gift of rest. Help us to trust you with our worries, in Jesus' name, amen.
