A Gentle Heart
"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11: 28-30 (NRSV)
Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Philippians 4:5 (NRSV)
Piyumi Kapugeekiyana, from Western Province, Sri Lanka, is a driven person. He thrives on achieving new things and checking items off his daily to-do list. He was competitive early in his childhood, even over simple games like musical chairs. As he grew older, Piyumi began to believe the message that we must always bring our best to everything we do, and even that we must always be the best.
In many ways Piyumi has been rewarded for his drive throughout his life. But what few people know is how hard he is on himself. He can be his own worst critic, examining everything he says and does for flaws. He scrutinizes his performance at work, at home, in ministry, and in his relationships. And he expects more from himself than anyone else ever does.
Lately God has been showing him another way. Jesus had a difficult mission to accomplish, but his approach made all the difference. Jesus had a calm and gentle spirit, and from this wellspring of divine love flowed acts of kindness, healing, and restoration. Piyumi thinks God wants us to pursue worthy goals and plans. But first, God wants to show us that how we go about pursuing them is just as important.
Prayer: Dear God, as we pursue goals in life, teach us to be gentle with ourselves and others, in Jesus' name. Amen.
