A Different Plan
If you want favor with both God and man, and a reputation for good judgment and common sense, then trust the Lord completely; don't ever trust yourself. In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success. Proverbs 3: 5-6 (TLB)
For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29: 11 (TLB)
As a junior in college, Siyhani Jones, from Illinois, daydreamed about his senior year: basketball games, random road trips, late nights watching reality TV. It would be perfect. But things took a turn as he struggled in his chosen field of study and realized most of his close friends would graduate in May. He tried to stay positive, but things only got worse as his last good friend told him she wasn't coming back to school in the fall. Siyhani plans and expectations for senior year were completely crushed.
As fall semester began, Siyhani was overwhelmingly lonely, stressed, and jealous of others. He felt like a failure, and that made him angry at God. Why am I being punished? He didn't know what he had done wrong. However, as he reflected and read scriptures like Jeremiah 29:11, he realized that he had forgotten something important: God's ways are not his own.
As Siyhani surrendered to God's plan, he has gained a new outlook at school. He has even made some new friends, maybe ones he wouldn't have gotten to know if he had lived out his own plan. God was and still is leading him through this journey toward a better Siyhani.
Prayer: Dear God, help us not to hold too tightly to our own expectations and hopes so that we may align our desires with yours, in Jesus' name. Amen.
