A Clear Reminder

For Jehovah is my refuge! I choose the God above all gods to shelter me. How then can evil overtake me or any plague come near? For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will steady you with their hands to keep you from stumbling against the rocks on the trail. You can safely meet a lion or step on poisonous snakes, yes, even trample them beneath your feet!

For the Lord says, "Because he loves me I will rescue him; I will make him great because he trusts in my name. When he calls on me I will answer; I will be with him in trouble, and rescue him and honor him. I will satisfy him with a full life and give him my salvation." Psalms 91:9-16 (TLB)

Agueda Suarez lives in the Dominican Republic. She was driving alone on the highway, still two hours from her destination. She experienced an overwhelming sense of helplessness so powerful that she decided to pull over. She raised her hands and cried out to God. She wishes she could say crying out to God changed the helplessness she was experiencing, but that was not the case.

However, something else happened that day. She got back on the road, and after driving a few miles, a glorious rainbow came into view. In that moment, her heart filled with hope. That rainbow reminded Agueda of God's faithfulness and reassured her that God remains steadfast, celebrating our joys and embracing us in our struggles.

Burdened with worries and doubts, we sometimes ignore or overlook what God has done and is doing in our lives. But that rainbow was a reminder to Agueda that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Heb. 13:8). When we cry out to God, we know we can lean on God's promises of mercy and protection: "I'll be with you in troubling times....I'll show you my salvation" (Ps. 91:15,16).

Prayer: Our Maker and Protector, thank you for your promises in scripture that are manifested in your care for us. May we always be alert to reminders of your love, in Jesus' name. Amen.
