A Change of Focus
In one of these meetings he told them not to leave Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came upon them in fulfillment of the Father's promise, a matter he had previously discussed with them.
"John baptized you with water," he reminded them, "but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit in just a few days."
And another time when he appeared to them, they asked him, "Lord, are you going to free Israel (from Rome) now and restore us as an independent nation?"
"The Father sets those dates," he replied, "and they are not for you to know. But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power to testify about me with great effect, to the people in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, about my death and resurrection." Acts 1: 4-8 (TLB)
"Therefore go and make disciples in all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19 (TLB)
Lillian Saldana Campos is from La Habana, Cuba. While she was in medical school, she attended church regularly but her roommate did not know much about God. However, she became interested in the Bible Lillian kept by her bedside table. When she would spend time deeply focused on her coursework, her roommate would ask Lillian about Jesus and the Christian way of life. It annoyed Lillian to have to stop what she was doing and respond to her, but the interruptions compelled Lillian to more actively share her faith.
Then Lillian read Luke 24: 46-47, where Jesus said as he was about to leave the earth: "The Messiah will suffer and rise...and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations." Lillian realized then that she had not understood God's full purpose for her life. Studying medicine was not her only goal. as a follower of Christ she was also called to preach and share the good news of the gospel.
After further reflection, Lillian began to speak with her roommate about Jesus Christ and his teachings. After a while she became a faithful disciple of Jesus. Encouraged by Christ's teachings in scripture, Lillian is glad she listened and accepted God's prompting "to go and make disciples."
Prayer: Interrupt us, O God, when our focus needs to shift. Inspire us to be ready to share your good news, in Jesus' name. Amen.
