A Change of Direction
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy. Psalm 92: 1-4 (NRSV)
The Lord will guide you continually...…Isaiah 58:11 (NRSV)
Andrea Woronick is from Connecticut. Most of her adult life had been spent in children's ministry. She first began as a volunteer in her church, then took a full-time position. Andrea found no greater joy than seeing children's faces light up when they saw how God was working in their lives.
Then the day came when Andrea couldn't continue this ministry because of staff changes in their church. She was heartbroken. Andrea kept turning to God in prayer, asking what she should do - how she could best serve.
At about the same time, her mother was admitted to a nursing home for those with dementia. On one of Andrea's visits, they gathered for a music program. Andrea saw how the residents responded to the music, and she was amazed. She had played piano since childhood, and she volunteered to play each week. It was pure joy for her watching them sing along to songs they remembered from years ago. And it brought proud tears to her mother's eyes. After her Mom died, Andrea contacted some nursing homes nearer to where she lived and offered to play music for the residents.
Andrea never imagined that her gifts would lead her to serve outside of children's ministry. But these past few years have shown her that when we ask God for guidance, God leads us to places we may never have ventured.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to let go of preconceived ideas so that we can hear your voice of wisdom for our lives, in Jesus' name. Amen.
