A Caregiver's Testimony

For God, who said, "Let there be light in the darkness," has made us understand that it is the brightness of his glory that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

But this precious treasure - this light and power that now shine within us - is held in a perishable container, that is, in our weak bodies. Everyone can see that the glorious power within must be from God and is not our own.

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken. We are perplexed because we don't know why things happen as they do, but we don't give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. These bodies of ours are constantly facing death just as Jesus did; so it is clear to all that it is only the living Christ within (who keeps us safe). 2 Corinthians 4:6-10 (TLB)

See, God has come to save me! I will trust and not be afraid, for the Lord is my strength and song; he is my salvation.

Isaiah 12:2 (TLB)

Digna Lebron Silva is from Puerto Rico. She has been married for more than 55 years. For the last nine years, she has been her husband's full time caregiver. He depends on her for his every need because he lives with both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. At the end of each day Digna is exhausted but not shattered.

Her family and friends are her support system. They remain in contact with them by visiting or calling. They sustain Digna and her husband with their prayers and words of encouragement. Digna is grateful, and she thanks God for each one of them.

Digna finds her greatest source of comfort and strength in God's word referenced in Isaiah 41:10: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Because God renews Digna's strength each day, she fully trusts that no matter how challenging the circumstances, she will not face the new day alone. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Loving God, we look to you each day for your unfailing strength, love and grace. In all circumstances, your presence is our blessing, your strength our salvation. Thank you, Lord, in Jesus' name. Amen.
