A Broken World

Happy are all who perfectly follow the laws of God. Happy are all who search for God, and always do his will, rejecting compromise with evil, and walking only in his paths. You have given us your laws to obey - oh, how I want to follow them consistently. Then I will not be disgraced, for I will have a clean record.

After you have corrected me I will thank you by living as I should! I will obey! Oh, don't forsake me and let me slip back into sin again.

How can a young man stay pure? By reading your Word and following its rules. I have tried my best to find you - don't let me wander off from your instructions. I have thought much about your words, and stored them in my heart so that they would hold me back from sin.

Blessed Lord, teach me your rules. I have recited your laws, and rejoiced in them more than riches. I will mediate upon them and give them my full respect. I will delight in them and not forget them. Psalms 119: 1-16 (TLB)

T. L. Valluy is from Ile-de-France, France. "It's broken!" Tears streamed down his child's face as water poured out of his snow globe, and the world inside was destroyed. This small toy, which had brought him so much joy, could not be fixed and now was a source of sorrow. T.L. thought that this is probably a bit of how God feels seeing the brokenness of our world. But unlike his son's snow globe, our world isn't being thrown away. God has a plan to redeem it, one that's already been put in motion through the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

His son's broken snow globe was edged with glass and too dangerous to be kept. Likewise, our world is filled with sin, which brings danger with it. But God does not abandon us. Today's verse makes it sound simple: learn God's word and avoid sin. But while it may be simple, it's not easy. Although it's not always easy to get up early each morning to spend time with God, every time T.L. does his day is better for it. God's word helps us grow in faith and reassures us that God is redeeming the brokenness in this world.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gift of your Word. Help us to grow in our relationship with you by spending time reading the Bible, in Jesus' name. Amen.
