Do you know the mind and purposes of God? Will long searching make them known to you? Are you qualified to judge the Almighty? He is as faultless as heaven is high - but who are you? His mind is fathomless - what can you know in comparison? His spirit is broader than the earth and wider than the sea. If he rushes in and makes an arrest, and calls the court to order, who is going to stop him? For he knows perfectly all the faults and sins of mankind; he sees all sin without searching.

"Mere man is as likely to be wise, as a wild donkey's colt is likely to be born a man!

"Before you turn to God and stretch out your hands to him, get rid of your sins and leave all iniquity behind you. Only then, without the spots of sin to defile you, can you walk steadily forward to God without fear. Only then can you forget your misery. It will all be in the past." Job 11:7-16 (TLB)

As Brenda Williams, from Washington, was recovering from shoulder replacement surgery, all was going well - that is, until she broke out in shingles. Anyone who has ever experienced shingles knows that the pain and general misery are a nightmare. Brenda confesses she was angry at God.

Brenda could relate in a very small way to what Job experienced. And, like Job, her prayers began with "Why?" Brenda was already extremely uncomfortable after the surgery, and now this festering annoyance was getting worse each day! "Why, God? What am I supposed to learn from this?"

Brenda is happy to say that the shingles wounds have healed, and her shoulder works better than ever. But she still doesn't understand what all that pain was supposed to teach her. Surely there is much in her life and in the world that just doesn't make sense. Sometimes we are not given the answers to our "why" questions, but we can trust that God is with us. We can cry out to God with what we don't understand and know that God loves us still.

Prayer: Loving God, help us to keep trusting you when our lives seem to be overly burdened. Strengthen our spirits, and walk with us through our struggles, in Jesus' name. Amen.
