Sleep in Peace
I lift up my eyes to the hills - from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keep you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber or sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your coming out and your going in from this time on and forevermore. Psalm 121 (NRSV)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart...Proverbs 3:5 (NRSV)
Juita Kartini comes from Jakarta Raya, Indonesia. One night when her younger brother and Juita were kids, he had a nightmare. Juita gave him a hug and asked him to go back to sleep. But he said the nightmare kept coming every time he closed his eyes. Juita suggested that he talk to God. So he sat down, prayed, and slept in peace. He didn't even need a hug anymore!
Juita is still amazed at the sincerity of a little child's heart - the ability to simply trust God. After her brother ended his prayer, he truly believed that God had listened to him and would guard him through the night.
As an adult. Juita has often recalled that moment when she has had to face fear and uncertainty. In those times, she reminds herself to trust God with all her heart and to worry less - to believe that God watches over her in every situation. Juita has learned to let God take over what she cannot control. When she does, God grants Juita peace.
We need to learn to do the same; to trust God and not lean on our own understanding.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to have a heart like a little child, to trust that You will show us the way through any fearful situation, in Jesus' name, amen.
