"I Am Still Here"
I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable. Psalm 145: 1-3 (NRSV)
So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 (NRSV)
Ann Vernon, from Missouri, and her husband needed some work done on their home, so they selected a repairman to do the job. When the man came to the house, he proved to be very professional. His bid was reasonable, and they like that he was soft-spoken and kind.
As he was leaving, he said, "I'll get back to you in a few days. I'm moving kind of slow; I have cancer." Ann was speechless.
"Actually," he said, "four years ago when they found the cancer, the doctor said I was a dead man; he gave me 30 days to live. I said, 'I can't go yet. I have things I have to do.' So I am still here.
"Four years!" Ann exclaimed. "Well," he said with a smile, "I am a child of God. I have people praying for me. My tumor had completely disappeared. But now it's back." And he shrugged.
"We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers!" Ann said, and she took his hand as he turned to leave.
Months later, long after he had finished the work, his testimony stayed with her: "I am a child of God." How easily he shared his faith! With only a few words he witnessed to Ann, and he inspired her to do the same with others. May we also be inspired to share our faith, especially in this time when people need God in their lives to get through this time of trial.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to share the good news of Christ, knowing that even simple words of witness can make a difference in the lives of the people we meet, in Jesus' name, amen.
