Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. Hebrews 12: 12-13 (NRSV)
Urvashi H. Parmar is from Gujarat, India. For several months her severe arthritis affected her gait. When she watched a video of herself walking, she was astonished. Her right foot slanted, causing her to limp.
Seeing her gait made her think of the way that problems we face can cause us to drift away from our spiritual path. Trials tend to drain our physical and mental strength. However, when we take our questions and troubles to God through prayer and Bible study, we find our weak feet becoming sturdy and strong. As Habakkuk discovered, "The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights" (Hab. 3: 19).
Sometimes when we feel ourselves going smoothly along the spiritual path, we may boastfully take credit for our stable footing. At those times, we might want to heed the words of Isaiah, "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away" (Isaiah 64:6). We can give God the glory for providing us with strength and security.
Prayer: Loving heavenly Father, help us to walk in your sure ways and clear path, in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
