The Good Shepherd
Read Psalm 23
He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Isaiah 40:11 (NRSV)
Clare Drew, from Gauteng, South Africa, was chatting with her cousin when she recalled a visit to his farm in Tulbagh, South Africa. Sensing a lamb was in distress, her uncle invited Clare to go with him into the fields. Dusk was falling as they headed in the direction of a faint sound. They found a lamb that had fallen into a ditch and was trapped. They were both awed by the prompting that led to the rescue of one lamb.
That memory reinforced Clare's faith in the love of the Good Shepherd, and Clare reflected on how God had been with her on her 30-year journey with multiple sclerosis. At a very low point in her life, she had attended a healing service where hands were laid on her head and prayers were offered. Then she heard these softly spoken words: "God has a special name for you. He calls you his little lamb, and he will pick you up and carry you."
God knows each of us by name, and Jesus' words from the Gospel of John reveal that truth: "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me" (John 10:14, NIV).
When you are having a bad day, try to picture yourself in the arms of Jesus as He carries you thru the rough time. Can you feel the warmth and comfort of being protected in his arms? I hope you can!
Prayer: Loving Shepherd, we give you thanks and praise for rescuing and protecting us. Help us to listen for your voice and follow you, in Jesus' name, amen.
