Read 2 Samuel 15: 13-26 David flees from Jerusalem
I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me. Psalm 3:5 (NRSV)
Awlwyn Balnave, from British Columbia, was walking on the beach with his wife when they came across a very large green turtle lying by the water's edge. It lay motionless on the sand throughout the day, opening its eyes briefly only when someone went close to it. Awlwyn wondered why it was there and what it was doing. Later they went to a local marine observatory, and the staff taught them that green turtles rest on the shore where they are safe from harm.
Second Samuel 15 details David's flight from Jerusalem. David did not know what the future held for him. Yet he was not consumed with fear and anxiety. He was content to leave the future in God's hands, a God who knows the end from the beginning. Like the turtle that was able to rest on the beach, David was able to rest because he knew that God's care and protection surrounded him. When our future seems uncertain and fear and anxiety overwhelm us, we too can lie down and rest, knowing that God is in control of all things.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to trust in your mercy and grace. When our future looks uncertain, thank you for loving us and caring for us, in Jesus' name, amen.
