God's Wonderful Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. John 1: 1-5 (NRSV)
Bless is the one who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in it; for the time is near. Revelation 1:3 (NRSV)
William Findlay, from Scotland, bought an electronic tablet to gain access to his emails. However, he quickly found out that the tablet contained many more applications. Soon he was exploring his new device in detail and deriving great pleasure from it.
In many ways, William's response to the Bible was similar. His parents gave him his first Bible. When he was a boy in Sunday school, their teacher would announce a passage, and they would look it up. Sometimes they were asked to memorize a particular verse, which required that William look up the verse in his Bible at home. As the years passed and he began to read parts of the Bible on his own, he became more interested and - in the fullness of time - gave his life to Christ.
That was only the beginning. The more William read the Bible, the more he wanted to read it. Later, as a Sunday school teacher and Bible class leader, he shared his knowledge of scripture with others. Although he no longer teaches the Bible, he still reads the Bible on his own or with a Bible study group. In addition, he refers to the Bible for guidance and often reads it for relaxation. The more he explores God's Word, the more he derives pleasure from it.
I don't know about you but I find the same pleasure in reading the Bible out loud. The more I have read it, the more I enjoy reading it. There are so many stories of war, romance, spy's, failures and successes. So many rules to live by, yet they make life worth living. It teaches what to avoid in life and how to make life better. Learn about a God who loves you and me with an amazing love that surpasses our understanding. Try it and you may just find yourself joining William and me in the pleasure the Bible gives us.
Prayer: Dear Father, lead us day by day as we explore your Word, in Jesus' name, amen.
