Redeeming Love

Consider your own call, brothers and sister; not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord."

In 2003, Jodi Harris, from California, was hospitalized for depression. Her image as a pastor's wife who had it all together was shattered. She spent two weeks alongside drug addicts, schizophrenics, and alcoholics. By society's standards, they were all failures and outcasts: weak, broken, and ashamed.

As they each shared their stories, Jodi watched the others give comfort and encouragement. They offered kind words, a touch, or silent acceptance of "you're not alone" and "me too." no one gave advice; no one condemned. No one judged or acted better than anyone else. after all, as hospital patients they could not pretend that they were well.

Romans 3: 23-24 tells us that no distinctions exist among us since all "fall short of the glory of God...{but} are now justified by {God's} grace as a gift."

In today's reading, Paul reminded the Corinthian church that value does not lie in worldly wisdom, wealth, or power; rather, it is our identity in Christ. In our weaknesses, Christ unites us and gives us his wisdom, wealth, and power.

Jodi no longer needs to depend on her image as a pastor's wife for acceptance. Instead, in her brokenness, she can reveal Christ and will boast in Him. This is true of all of us. We can each, in our brokenness, boast in all that God has done for us thru His beloved son, Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Redeeming God, forgive us for wanting to look good before others. Remind us that it's only in You that we are made whole, in Jesus' name, amen.
